I was kind of optimistic about reviewing this film, when I received it in the mail the filmmakers had informed me that the film was not fully complete, that the screener was a “work in progress”. So I figured well that’s no reason for me to be all soft on the film. But I must admit, I was surprised by how well put together this film was.

In a Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt style, “Stories of a Gravedigger” follows the same format. We are first shown a short cartoon of two young boys sneaking into a graveyard to do a school project when they are befriended by a gravedigger. The Gravedigger begins to tell them stories and we are bought in and out of the three films that make up this first chapter of this series.

Without giving up any of the plot of all three stories, I’m going to just keep my review short and sweet and talk about how well made the film was. I honesty thought that this film was very well put together for an independent film. I was very impressed by how well the quality of the movie was, and how great the shot were. There is some really good photography in this film. the production value is also very good, I was surprised by how well the filmmakers used the locations they had to really bring out the stories within the film.

Now the film does have a few flaws, first and foremost I thought that some of the stories were a bit too long and probably could be shortened. Also some of the make-up effects look unrealistic, but hey, that indie filmmaking for ya. I also felt that the editing was a bit jumpy at times as well.

Overall, I enjoyed this film though, the overall quality and production value is really what did it for me. If your a big fan of films such as “Creepshow and “Tales from the Darkside” as well as the Television series “Tales from the Crypt”. Then I’m sure you’ll enjoy “Tales of a Gravedigger”. It’s a very well made, well put together film.
