Cyn is a five minute film by a guy whom I believe is one of the best independent filmmakers around, Alex Ferrari. If that name sounds familiar, it should. He directed one of the best short films I’ve ever seen titled “Broken”. Broken was shot for a few thousand dollars and looked like it was made for about a million. The same can be said for this little short.

Cyn actually comes off as more of a scene from a film than it does a real movie. That’s mainly because it is a short based from a script that Alex is turning into a feature film. Cyn is like an experiment to get in the mood of the character of Cyn and see how well he’ll be able to develop this character in a feature film. I believe that he succeeds very well in this five minute piece.

In a nutshell the story is about two men whom have a girl captive. We really don’t know why, but they keep saying it’s a gig for quick money. Little do they know that she has a bit of power that she can use to her advantage anytime she wants. The results are not what these two guys have in mind.

It’s kind of hard to write a lot about a film that is only five minutes long. Really all I can say about everything this film has to offer is that it’s very good. Everything for the most part is perfect. Probably the only thing that I noticed ruined part of the film for me a bit was that no sound effects were added during the fight scenes to emphasis the sound of the hits and kicks. That’s really my only complaint, but that’s something that can easily be fixed. As far as everything else goes with the film; the acting, directing, script and effects were really good.

Overall, like I mentioned about it’s hard to write a long review for a film that is so short. Normally I wouldn’t bother doing a write up at all, but Alex Ferrari get’s a free pass from me, because he’s earned my respect. There are few people in this business that can make great films with very little money, and Alex has that talent. It baffles me that studios can throw away millions of dollars on films that are so poorly made, by directors who really don’t have the talent. If Hollywood would take their time and look at reviews of movies such as Broken and Cyn, and see the great responses that a director like Alex get. Maybe they might consider hiring someone like him and give them the shot to live their dreams. I rarely say things like this, because I believe that most independent filmmakers should find another job. But in rare cases such as this, guys like Alex deserve that shot. Cyn only proves how great of a director and writer Alex Ferrari is.
