Cult is a film that should of been made during the 1990’s when films like Scream, I Know What you Did Last Summer and Urban Legends were the hits. Cult has that same college/teen format where a group of young adults get themselves caught up in a mischief of horror and mayhem. The problem is that a film like this has been done plenty of times over. And although I give the film it’s merits for having somewhat of a different approach to the sub genre of teen horror films it still falls short in many ways.

Cult is very similar to the format of such films like David DeCoteau’s The Brotherhood and Wishmaster. it’s kind of funny because you can basically pick out other horror films and relate them to this film while your watching it. The first scene reminds me of the beginning scene in Urban Legend, minus the pop rocks and soda. We find out a lot about cults and religion and so on, and our characterless are given the assignment to go out an research an old cult for a class project. However while researching they get more than they bargain for when then uncover a mysterious amulet that once was used used by the former cult leader. The amulet is said to house secret powers; and the former cult leader as we find out at the very beginning of this film tried to sacrifice all his female followers in an attempt to gain the power that this mysterious amulet holds. He however does not. Now, years later this group of classmates will try and learn more about this amulet they have found, however little do they know that they are about to unleash the evil inside it, and it may just cost them their lives and friendships.

The plot of this film, seems simple enough, however I did find it to be very hard to follow and very hard to watch. Yes it had some great good old fashioned blood and guts, but nothing that we all haven’t seen before. I felt that the overall script was very loose and the story was very twisty that one might not enjoy the very complexity of the story. I also felt the editing was very jumpy and it kind of made the film drag, and made it almost hard to watch.

The overall all acting in the film is pretty good, we do have a few familiar faces in it such as Rachel Miner and Taryn Manning who without them this film probably would of seen the light of day. Still their halfway decent acting and the supporting cast still could of not helped this film be any better. Probably the only thing that was stood more than the decent acting was the great use of effects, and the overall abundance of blood in the film. The effects team did a pretty good job, and my hat’s are off to them. Maybe if they we’re used more to liven up the script with more gore the film would of have been better.

Overall, Cult is a film that the hardcore horror fans are most likely not going to enjoy. this film will probably appeal more to the young teenage crowd or a group of young college girls who want to have a dorm room scare for a night.
