WINTER OF FROZEN DREAMS is a film that many have talked about, and were wondering when it would be released. For those of you who are wondering it’s hitting DVD soon from Monterey Media. There are a lot of rumors that have circulated throughout the web, as to certain details about the movie concerning it’s star Thora Birch. Are these rumors true. Well, you’ll have to read the rest of this review to find out.
Based on a true story; WINTER OF FROZEN DREAMS is about a bright college educated women named Barbara Hoffman (Thora Birch) whom works in a massage parlor as a prostitute. She meets many lonely men who in turn fall for her. Barbara however is more interested in what they have to offer rather than what kind of love they can give her. She agree to marry a man whom has a lot of offer her, then turns around and kills him. We learn in the beginning she has a young fiancé (Brendan Sexton III) whom helps her dispose of the body, only to go to the police hours after he helped her dispose of it. The film takes a turn as it tells the true story of Barbara Hoffman and how an investigation lead to her arrest for the men she murdered.
The script for the film is actually pretty good, it is slow at certain times, but it is very detailed. The script was researched very well, and the writers went though great lengths to find the best information he could about the true story. The dialogue was very well written and the characters were all equally developed. It’s not a perfect script, but it was well written and executed decently by the filmmakers.
The film has some pretty good acting. Thora Birch gives a pretty good performance as well as Brendon Sexton whom plays her rather shy fiancé. Keith Carradine, Dean Winters, Dan Moron and the rest of the cast were also good in their respected roles. As far as the production value, it was pretty basic, but it did it’s job and the direction and editing were top notch. I particular like the nior look of the film and the eerie and quiet feel I got from watching it. the music also adds to the feel as well.
The DVD has a few features such as an interview with actor Keith Carradine, A behind the scenes featurette that talks about the history of the case involving Barbara Hoffman, and another feature about the author of the story, Karl Harter. There is also a feature where you can see trailers for other films that are being released by Monterey Media.
So the real question that is floating around all over the internet, the rumors, the stories and so on. Is this talk about Thora Birch being completely nude and baring all to see for the camera true? Well, you did get to see her in some pretty revealing clothing and she does have sex in the film, but I hate to disappoint but in the cut I saw, I did not see her bare her body for everyone to see at all. So the rumor of her showing everything is false. But, she does look really hot in this film to say the least. Overall, it’s a very well made film. Not perfect, but it’s good.
