“Remember, remember, the 5th of November” This is the first quote of a film who’s main character uses so many of. However the above quote and the first scene in the film are what define the film, and the character of V, thus the mask he wears is the face of Guy Fawkes, one of the first revolutionists who tried to blow up the English Parliament in 17th century. However Guy Fawkes failed in his attempt to free England and was hung for his crimes.
Fast forward to the future, past our present time and into the future. The United States as a union no longer exists and as explained in the film the remains of the U.S. are in the middle of yet another civil war. The United Kingdom no longer has a free standing government. A conservative dictator know as Chancellor Adam Sutler and his party have taken rule over the country. All citizens must follow certain laws and restrictions or face hard tortuous jail time or even face death. The story follows a young girl named Evey (Natalie Portman) who works for a national television station that is more or less controlled by the new established government. Evey is on her way to meet up with her boss when she in confronted by two government agents whom don’t like the fact that she is out after curfew. They attempt to rape her, however V makes his appearance into the film and rescues Evey from them. He then invites Evey to see something spectacular. Little does she know that he has planned to blow up a major monument. Which in turn will turn Evey into a fugitive. The story then spirals into a freedom fight against the Nazi like government, all of which V has planned. I leave it at that, I’m not going to spoil a good film by giving the story away.
V for Vendetta might be a film that could upset a lot of people giving the state the world is in right now. However I don’t think the movie, based on the graphic novel was made to protest what’s going on with the United States, and the Britain right now. Instead I think the write got his idea more or less from Nazi Germany and the reign of Adolf Hitler more than anything. He created the superhero of V to take care of business and be the hope that will free the people from the vile government that controls them.
This movie is hand down awesome. I loved every minute of it. The script was perfect. A top notch hero, a ruthless villain and an awesome and strong heroine. The whole story has meaning and is one that is meant to open the audiences mind. It’s a story that tell you to stand up for what you believe. That’s what I liked about this film.
The Acting is top notch. Hugo Weaving was the perfect person to play V, and we never even got to see his face. Nataline Portman performance as Evey is outstanding, Evey is the backbone of the film, and I don’t think any one else could have done a better job. John Hurt was excellent as Chancellor Adam Sutler. I mean he made me hate this character so much I felt like jumping though the screen and killing him myself. A very well cast film.
I could sit here and write for hours why I liked this film so much, so I’ll stop here. All I have to say is that you need to drop what’s going on in the world today before you watch this film. Don’t compare the two, this is a story that was written as a graphic novel back in the 1980’s. So don’t compare the film to today’s world events. Sit back and relax and be prepared to be awed by such a great masterpiece of a film.
