There are hundreds of bad movies produced each year. In the horror genre this is always a problem. Every year we are faced with more bad horror flicks, most of them are direct to DVD that plagues our video stores and online rental houses. However, there are some films that top the norm for being so bad that you can’t peel your eyes off the screen. One such film is Troll 2, which is so bad; a recent documentary was made about the film that exploits it as the best, worst movie ever made.
In this mess of a film a young boy named Joshua is visited by the ghost of his dead grandfather who warns him that the trip his family is about to take to the town of Nilbog is actually a town run by goblins. Joshua’s parents don’t listen to him and away they go. When they get into town they notice that the locals are not around. When they get to the rental house however, they find a nice meal waiting for them that is until Joshua pisses on everything. The reason, the town’s folks are in on the gig with the goblins and feed anyone who is an outsider a special food that turns humans into plants. Using his knowledge given to him by his dead Orson Welles looking grandfather, (He also poses as the Wizard of Oz and the Mirror Mirror on the wall) Joshua will fight the Goblins and their queen to save his family from becoming their next meal.
I can not begin to write all the things that are wrong with this film. It is that much of a mess. First off, the script is not that bad of a fantasy story, I’ll give it that, because it has this off beat, original, ridiculous story. The dialogue on the other hand is so bad I found myself laughing at almost every scene. It becomes one of those films where you say to yourself; seriously someone put money into producing this? The special effects are only decent when a victim was about to be turned into a plant, yet the goblins themselves were obviously just a bunch of children or little people wrapped in burlap with Halloween masks on. The acting is horrible, so are the directing and the editing. It’s just a bad film all together, yet one can not seem to take their eyes off the screen.
The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack does not have much on it other than the films theatrical trailer. (I can’t believe this film was actually released in theaters) and the Blu-ray disc has the smart menu technology. I was really hoping the disc would include the documentary Best Worst Movie, however it sadly does not.
Troll 2 is a really bad movie, however unlike most bad horror films, where we know the film is bad from the get go, Troll 2 has this odd fantasy appeal to it that even though we know it’s bad, one just can’t help but see the whole thing through. After all, what other movie can you think of where your grandfather has the power of god, troll witches run a town, and people are turned into plants by eating green food. Among all the other odd and weird things in this film; how can I not mention the corn on the cob make out scene. Up until the very end, Troll 2 is simply the best worst film ever made. So much so, I can only recommend it for shits and giggles and nothing more.
