I saw the original Toolbox Murders a few years ago when it was first released on DVD and I enjoyed it. I figured if this so called “remake” (Which I can reassure you it’s not a remake.) would probably be good. Well the movie is good for the most part. Do I like the original better? Well you really can’t compare the two at all.
This “Toolbox Murders” takes place in an apartment building that has a secret curse. A new Couple moves into the building and weird things begin to happen. People seem to just disappear. And our lead Nell Barrows, played by the lovely Angela Bettis, (May, Carrie). is onto the killings but is having trouble proving them.
The film starts off a bit slow and I was actually getting bored with it, but once the plot is established the film begins to pick up and becomes one hell of a roller coaster ride. I do however have a few complaints, I felt some of the dialogue in the script was a bit weak, and had an effect on the acting, I felt the way some of the lines were delivered by the actors were not believable at times. I did not get the feeling of the character they were playing. However once the fun begins and the killing starts I started to over look the acting and just watch the dam movie. The Story gets better as the film moves along.
The Special Make-up effects were great and they are what made the film, Our killer had this Leatherface type attitude, (Well Tobe Hooper created him.) while looking a bit like Nemesis from Resident Evil, his techniques with tools and the way he killed his victims was great, some very original kills in this film. The body count is out of control towards the end of the film. One of the final battles takes place in a room filled with rotting corpses and recently killed victims.
Overall “Toolbox Murders” Is a pretty decent film, and is worth renting. I’m not going to say it was perfect, but it had a simple story that is easy enough to follow but it does start off a bit slow. Probably a film that most hardcore horror fans should check out. Plenty of good gore to go around.
