For the first time I thought I was going to hate an M. Night Shyamalan film, however “The Village” which starts off slow, slowly become a great intense thriller. The story start off with a small village in which a community of people in the late 1800’s have their farms and other little jobs they do, everyone is equal, and there is no money in the village, everyone tends to take care of each other. Their are monster’s that live in the woods surrounding the village that supposedly have a truce with the people, however when one fearless young man crosses that border all hell starts to break loose.
If your expecting “The Village” to be like all of the other M. Night Shyamalan films you’ll be surprised as I was with this film. There are in essence three surprises in this film all that lead into one another, now I predicted even before I saw the film what the first surprise was, but I never expected two more. That’s what makes this film worth seeing. It’s brilliant filmmaking.
Bryce Dallas Howard daughter of famous director and Happy Days actor, Ron Howard, gives one hell of a performance as the blind girl Ivy Walker in the film. All of the acting is pretty great, Academy Award Winner Adrien Brody gives another knock out performance as the slow and disabled Noah Percy. All the acting is great but the above two performances stick out. The Directing as always with M. Night Shyamalan, is nothing but perfect. He is truly the new Hitchcock. There are not much special effects in the film at all, matter of fact I don’t think there is any at all, just some blood and make-up effects. The screenplay is decent but is not as good as some of M. Night Shyamalan other films, and the plot does start off a little bit slow but helps with character development.
Overall “The Village” gets my seal of approval, not as great as Mr. Shyamalan other films, but still makes the cut in my book. I think most people will be as surprised as I was when they leave the theater. However it’s one of those films I feel that people are either going to love it or hate it.
