There are so many pointless low budget vampire movies out there and so many more being made each year that I usually just pass them by at the video store and laugh at the titles for most of them. While my expectations were the same for this vampire film titled: The Thirst; while I didn’t particularly care much for this plot less movie, I give it credit for not being just another boring vampire movie.
The Thirst; in a nutshell is about two recovering drug addicts whom are taken in by a clan of vampires that will give them all the sexual pleasure they want. Problem is that their vampires who not only want to screw around but want to drink blood and eat flesh as well. Honestly that pretty much the whole plot of this film. However there is a small clan of people who want to destroy the cult and blah, blah blah, insert a storyline that we have all heard before.
So honestly folks here are the up and downs of this film. First off there is really no plot at all, every time I thought the plot would actually develop into a story, I just got over killed with blood and guts over and over again. And that was what 99% of this film was; nothing but blood and guts. It had no plot at all. So that’s where I stand on the script as well with this film, because it seemed to have more action than dialogue, sometimes that’s not a bad thing, but in the case of this film it was over done.
Honestly folks, this film is another case of a movie that is a kill for a kill sort of movie, there is nothing that helps make the film anything better than just a bunch of gore filled killing over and over again.
In the case of the films acting, I will say that even though this film didn’t really require it’s actors to do anything but go along with the overall gore and guts this film had to offer, in such a movie where an over use of effects are going to be used you have to give any actor credit for getting their hands dirty and covering themselves with blood and gore. While the script does not require much acting from it’s cast, I will say that each performance in the film was pretty good, and the cast got their job done.
As for the director and his style, I think that although the script was nothing great, Jeremy Kasten has a great eye for visuals and getting the shot he wants. One great thing that this movie had was the style in which it was shot. The films overall was visually inspiring and that in all is what kept my interest. Which leads me to the effects this film had to offer. While the movie lacked in plot, it did make up for with some great special effects, and boy were there a lot of effects in this film. God only knows how many buckets of fake blood they went though making this film, but it has to hold some kind of record for the use of blood in a movie. I mean every dam scene is covered in red, and there is so much violence and gore in the film that I’m sure that any fan of just straight up gore will love it and forget about the overall plot of the film.
Overall however, I’ve always been a guy who needs a good story to go along with his blood and guts, and I didn’t get one here. I give the film credit for it’s visuals, and the decent directing and acting. But the script is what killed this film for me. If your a fan of gore infested vampire films, you’ll love this movie. But if you need a good plot to go with your gore, like myself. The Thirst may not be for you.
