It’s pretty well know that I’ve never really been a big fan of anything that Brain Damage Films puts out with the exception of the film “Goth” (On which I thought was a pretty decent film.) Recently I’ve been finding myself being critical on Independent films that are way to long, The Tenement is way to long and I saw a lot of things that I would of cut. I’m going to get a little off the topic of a review for a second and explain why.

About a year ago, I co-wrote and produced a comedy film, when editing was done I told my business partner who directed and edited the film that I though it was way to long. he insisted that it needed to be that way because it would take away from the comedy and the story. Well needless to say after test screenings, I was right. It was way to long and the parts we thought people would laugh at, they didn’t. So now our two hour film has been cut back to an hour and 35 mins. It flows much better now, and although I don’t consider it a master piece by any sorts, I think it’s a lot better than it was. And I still think we can cut about another 5-6 mins more.

My point is that when I sit down to watch a film now, I like it to be fasted paced, It comes from watching so many films, that after a while if the action is not happening on a major level, (Lord of the Rings, I can sit though cause flows well.) than I’ll just get bored or fast forward though half the film. That’s what happened with this film, The beginning was decent, even though I felt like I was watching a day time soap opera, then it just got boring for a while. I just felt like enough was enough after a while then I’d just go onto the next story. One thing I can say though is that the stories did get better. The last one in particular I enjoyed with two killers falling in love. That was a great story.

Now lets talk details: The acting was over the top bad for the most part, I know most of the actors probably have never been in a film before, and I understand that but when you see people cracking smiles or in some cases struggling to remember lines or adlibbing, with out making any kind of sense, it hurts the film. It takes away from the effect. the low budget gore is pretty good for what it’s worth and the film has a lot of it. There are also some elements of comedy that horror fans will enjoy, poking fun at or making reference to other horror films is always a good thing. And there is enough nudity and good looking girls to keep any fourteen year old boy busy for two hours.

Overall some of the stores are good and other’s were just plan boring, It is one of the better Brain Damage Films to be released, which does say a lot, But the again all low budget films have their flaws and it’s something that we have to try to look past and focus on the story. What would of made me enjoy this film much more is if it was cut shorter.
