Okay, there are two things you really need to know about Santa’s Slay: 1) it stars wrestler Bill Goldberg, 2) he plays a killer Santa (who also happens to be the son of Satan). If you’re not excited by these two aspects of this little slice of chaotic cinematic cheese, you won’t ever be. If you’re intrigued, however, keep reading. It gets even better.
You see, Santa isn’t who you think he is. The only reason he’s been spreading joy and happily “Ho Ho Ho”-ing is because he lost a rock sliding bet with an angel. Santa’s loss required him to be jolly ol’ St. Nick for a limited amount of time–1,000 years, to be exact. Well, it’s Christmas time again, and guess what? Those 1,000 years are now up, so Santa, being the true hellspawn that he is, is now free to come to earth and make his dream of a blood-red Christmas a reality.
And make it a reality he does. You want Christmas-themed violence, mayhem, and murder? Santa’s Slay has it all. Santa breaks through chimneys, kicks a family dog, fills a man with stuffing and smashes his face into a dinner table, stabs a dude with a candy cane, asphyxiates a guy with a wreath, knocks the hell out of a bunch of strip club denizens with a striptease pole, lets the gigantic Viking buffalo that pull his sled trample and crush a strip club valet, and most importantly, kills Chris Kattan. There’s even a flashback scene that is done in the classic Rankin Bass Christmas style of animation, and a scene where a zamboni-driving Santa makes Hell appear under an ice-skating rink. But that’s just a taste of all that goes down in Santa’s Slay. It’s truly that magical.
The film was stuck in post-production purgatory for a while, but was recently aired on Spike TV with absolutely no advertising to back it up—and it’s a shame, because this is one of the best campy horror comedies in recent history (luckily, the film will see a DVD release on December 20th). In terms of a corny Santa slasher, Santa’s Slay is perfect. The film serves its purpose and serves it well.
Santa’s Slay does, however, have a limited audience. Not everyone is going to find humor in the fact that Bill Goldberg is running and flying around a small town in full satanic Santa attire while murdering everything in sight–but for those that “get it”, Santa’s Slay is a hoot and a fucking holler.
