Tagline: Inspired by the true story of the most prolific serial killer in history.
Like lambs being led to the slaughter, Spooky Dan, Ryan Rotten, Mike Mendez, Stephen Susco, Steven Miller, myself and a slate of other horror filmmakers strolled into the theatre on a chilly Friday night and we all moaned;
“This is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!”
Based loosely on the at-large crocodile, Gustave lives in Burundi, Africa and feeds on the locals at their sole watering source, this film had potential.
In a surprising move within the last 10 days, Disney shifted this film’s opening from April to January 12th with an aggressive ad campaign. The Weinstein’s saw this and have indefinitely pulled their own croc film from the release schedule of 2007. Their film entitled, Rogue, directed by Greg McLean, stars Michael Vartan, Radha Mitchell, and the ever creepy John Jarrat who starred in McLean’s last effort Wolf Creek.
I will review this film as the filmmakers made it.
Gravesite identification by some doctor we don’t care about. Crocodile’s mouth. Blood. Introduction of Dominic Purcell, Orlando Jones, Brooke Langton. Flight to Burundi. Blood. Boat ride to meet their guide. Blood. Jurgen Prochnow chews the scenery. Rain. Blood. Bad CGI of a croc. Blood. We can’t really see what’s happening on screen. Blood. People scream and die. Blood. Brooke Langton runs around with her shirt wide open and is covered in…Blood.
As you can read, in a nutshell, this film was very cut & pasted together.
Then the filmmakers decided to tie in this whole Lord of War backdrop and political crap. This film made no sense. The crocodile looked like crap. The best scene featured Orlando Jones and the croc Gustave but they left the scene too early.
There were some cool sequences, but again, no one knew exactly what we were witnessing. It just wasn’t clear. The two writers of this are fully capable of making good B-film material great (i.e. Terminator 3) but it’s almost as if they gave up on this film.
The highlight for me was seeing the always beautiful Brooke Langton and hearing Ryan Rotten yell out at one point;
“That tree Rocks!”
This film is not worth your time.
