Congratulations to filmmaker Steffen Schlachtenhaufen; you have officially made the worst horror film that I have ever had the luxury of seeing. Honestly I think I probably should give this film four stars just for that fact, but I literally sat though the whole film. With that said, I don’t even know where to begin….
In short folks, Primal is about a bunch of college students who venture into the forest and stumble across a Bigfoot like monster who just like to kill anyone he see with his very long sharp claws for no apparent reason. Will they survive the Night? Who fu&*ing cares.
Honestly folks I’m going to take a lesson from my mother here, if I don’t haven anything nice to say I shouldn’t say it at all, so I’ll point out the finer details of the film and try to be as nice as possible.
The script is not good at all, it pretty much is full of disposable characters and just consists of one kill after another as each college student walks though the forest. We are beaten in the head with dialogue that seems more like a nature show at the beginning of the film and then just your normal “What’s happening! What’s going on! dialogue.
I can give credit to the actors at least for trying to do their best with the script. I can’t say the performances in the film were anything great, but at least they weren’t really bad to the point that I had to turn the movie off. Which trust me I’m sure plenty of people will.
As far as the production value this film is a disaster. The monster effects are horrible, they are so bad that the filmmakers and editors had to give us this terrible super cut after cut and post editing filters just to try and salvage something. Honestly its a total mess, and the film is just really hard to get into and take seriously.
Normally I won’t let my writers or myself for that matter write a review this short, but I don’t know what else to say about this film so I hope you get the hint. There is no way I can recommend this film to anyone, unless your really curious to see just how bad it is. I’m very surprised that Lion Gates agreed to pick this one up, but then again Bigfoot films do sell and theirs nothing a great box cover can’t do. Yes! the DVD art work is really cool, but that’s about it.
