Movies are getting pumped out of this studio like it’s going out of style. Many many young up and coming film makers plus a few old timers also. It is definitely a preferred taste, these home video/digital style (or that’s all they could afford) independent movie making these days just like Robert J. Masetti’s……….PHOBIAS. “When The Shadows Lie” kicks off this run of two short horror thrillers which dishes up a Sam Raimi (EVIL DEAD) camera mood, characters jumping right in your face. We have Frank More (John Fish) suffering from some delusional experiences. He can’t get over the terrifying images. He is driving himself MAD. He needs a shrink. Plain and simple. Did he see a shrink? Is he dreaming the whole damn thing? Is his girlfriend really cheating on him? Man, the anticipation is jargling my bones. I especially dig the scoring from Craig Padilla. Hauntingly old school a la 70’s 80’s eeriness, a subtle and low grabbing mood . It really brings out the intensity from little or next to nothing budget afforded for these, and I must say that it is a debut. The camera work I’m especially fond of. I’m a sucker for flying into someone’s face. I like to feel the movie, not just watch it. The second and longer of the 2 is……….. “Blackout“. A woman (Kathryn Lies) frustrated with her husband, decides something needs to be done about her little ball of flab and drunkenness. A “Blackout” occurs and whammo. See ya Charlie. She goes on with her life only to be stalked or haunted by something or someone. What is happening? Who is it? What is it? You’ll be asking yourself many a questions as Robert rolls you threw a double shot of suspense and horror. A debut to say the least also. Another in the works and a bright future for some slick talent.
