Well first I’d like to go on the record as saying that “Open Water” is nothing like Jaws. In Jaws we have one big ass shark that’s just a killing machine. In “Open Water” it’s no just the sharks that are the killers it’s the ocean, and everything in it. So if your going into this film expecting Jaws, like I’m sure most people are. your not going to get a film like Jaws.

When I left the theater, there were a lot of disappointed people, who were complaining about the film, mainly because of the ending I’m sure, which I loved. “Open Water” is not a sugar coated Hollywood film. It’s shot documentary style and has a grainy Independent film look, which is what the film is, an Independent film. there is not a lot of special rip roaring effects, the director used the less is more method to scare the audience, in essence he put you in the movie, in the water with this young couple and let you join them in their suffering. The film may not seem scary but it’s more of a real life film and does not use any tricks to scare you, it’s the reality of the fact that what happens in this film is real life and it could happen to anyone.

Overall if you can get past the style of the film and are not a puppet to the big flash Hollywood thrillers, you’ll understand that a film like “Open Water” tells the truth, this film is real life and could happen to anybody, it’s a real raw gritty film with no happy endings. It a classic in it’s own right, and if you know the water and are a person who lives on the ocean in the summer, you’ll be scared to death at what this film has to offer.
