So far “Oldboy” is the best film I’ve seen this year. I’m not sure what’s going on in South Korea, must be the water or something, but they are producing some great movies over there. I don’t even know where to begin with “Oldboy” It’s a film with a bit of everything, it is filmed like an art house movie, yet has some great fight scenes, great gross-out gore and a story that although it is “out of this world” makes perfect sense in the end.
“Oldboy” is about a guy who is jailed in a room by unknown captors for 15 years, when he finally breaks free there is nothing that will stop him for seeking out who did this to him and why. Revenge becomes the theme of the film as he hunts down and goes after anyone in his way.
The Screenplay was excellent, a very edgy well written piece of work, the story was paced perfectly and flawless. The story is one for the ages and I can’t begin to tell you how much emotion went into it. There are times in this film that you will feel sick, you will feel like crying and you’ll feel like kicking ass. “Oldboy” is a film filled with emotions, and nothing but a grade A storyline.
The Acting is great, With such a great script the casting had to be solid or the film would of ran into problems. The good thing is the acting is beyond solid. Choi Min-sik who plays Oh Dae-su (The lead role). was out of this world. All the other supporting actors as well were perfectly cast. I really want to know why “Oldboy” never got an Oscar nod for best foreign film.
The effects are good, we have some sick make-up effects but nothing that will gross you out that bad. Some teeth puling, a tongue getting cut from a mouth. Probably the most graphic thing was Oh Dae-su eating a live octopus, which I heard actor Choi Min-sik really did.
Overall , it’s a must for all fans of Asian Horror films and Asian films in general to see. You can’t call yourself a true fan of Asian films if you have not tried to see this film. It’s mandatory viewing. Best film I’ve had the pleasure of seeing so far this year, and it’s only March. So if you can, see “Oldboy’ ASAP. You’ll love it.
