The first time I saw Rebecca DeMornay in a film it was The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. I remember that film well, because I saw it in theaters with my mother and sister. It quickly became one of those films we would watch on VHS a least one time a month. It was a film that shook us to the core and her performance as the antagonist in the film was nothing but spectacular.

Here I am twenty years later watching the reimaging of the 1980’s cult classic Mother’s Day. If you have seen the original 1980’s film this new version follows a similar format but with a different plot and characters. There are no crazy rednecks living in the woods kidnapping people. This film is in fact about a mother and her twenty something year old kids. Her three sons are robbing banks while mother and daughter wait. Together they meet at their old house, which they lost in foreclosure. Inside the home the news owners are throwing a party. That party however is about to be crashed by the previous owners and Mommy is about to set new rules for everyone, rules that if broken can result in torture and death.

I was very skeptical going into this one. I knew nothing about it other than it shared the title with an eighties low budget film. However, right before I popped the disc in the Blu-ray player I saw the cast involved and who the director was and figured this might be a decent film. It was more than just decent it was great, just when you think they made every possible scenario happening in a hostage film; another one with more substance, tension and suspense comes along. I don’t want to go into to much detail about the plot. The story has a lot of amazing characters. The script is great and the acting is top notch.

The Blu-ray disc contains audio commentary with director Darren Lynn Bousman and actor Shawn Ashmore. Other than that the disc just contains the movie. However for a barebones disc the film more than makes up for the lack of extras.

Other than The Cabin in the Woods there has not been another horror film this year that was even worth the mention. Mother’s Day however has a slight edge so far as being my top horror film of the year. However we are only in May and weather or not that will change is yet to be determined. If you have the stomach and the guts to watch Mother’s Day, I highly recommend it.
