You may be wondering why I have the poster for “Fangoria’s Blood Drive 2” above. Well the fact of the matter is that this short film “Mainstream” will in fact be part of Fangoria’s next Blood Drive Disc. However I know most people did not care for the first Fangoria Blood Drive, but with “Mainstream” being part of the second disc. I’m sure that “Blood Drive 2” will be a hell of a lot better.
I read in the press packet to this film that someone said it was very similar to the banned Nine Inch Nails video for the song “Happiness is Slavery”. I have seen the banned video on a really bad VHS version back when I was in High School. Although the concept is similar, I think “Mainstream” is done in better taste. Where “Happiness is Slavery” has a lot of gore and blood, “Mainstream” manages to use the less is more routine in certain shots and then gives us a little blood here and some brain fluid there. In all honesty I like “Mainstream” a lot better.
Now the acting in “Mainstream” is pretty much the best it could get. It is more of a silent film, yet there are a few lines here and there, but not many. The actors did a great job at looking cold and lifeless. Even in the last scene, which takes place in a house, everyone seems so lifeless in a place that seem it should be full of life.
The effects are spectacular, probably one of the best effects jobs I’ve seen done in an indie short film. the effects gave the film that eeriness you can only get from watching films like “Hellraiser” and “Phantasm”. The plot is pretty much runs on the basis that the effects set in the film, and without them this film probably would of not have worked at all.
Overall “Mainstream” is the kind of short film I like. It’s scary, cool and straight to the point. A great little masterpiece that should be part of short horror film history. When “Fangoria Blood Drive 2” hits video stores in October, be sure to rent it, I’m not saying you’ll have to watch the whole thing, but it’s well worth the rent to check out “Mainstream”.
