Back in the nineteen eighties and though most of the nineties; Fullmoon Pictures helmed by Charlie Band pumped out a brand of low budget horror film that were mostly known for their wacky plots with the releases of such film like Puppetmaster, Head of the Family and Freaks. All of these films had bizarre and unique characters and the style of the way in which the movie was filmed are resembled in this film, Dark House.
Dark House is about a group of drama students that are hired to work in a state of the art haunted house that uses illusions to scare its guests. Walston Rey (Jeffrey Combs) is the creator and marketing genius behind the high tech haunted attraction and to make the location of the house seem more appealing he sets up shop at a place where the scene where seven murders were committed. When guests begin entering the house and the actors begin to get into their roles; some unwanted guests seem to be in the house, and more murder and mayhem will ensue, with the illusions not being what they seem.
This film plays like a low budget B-movie, with its bad acting, bright sets and wacky storyline. What makes Dark House a decent movie is not its story (which is your typical straight forward one kill after another horror film). It is the films visuals and production value that keep it going. It has that great look of a low budget, dare I say, Fullmoon movie from the late eighties. That is what made this film what it was for me. It had that feel that bought me back to those late night video rentals when I was kid. When my friends and I would stay up late and watch these kinds of horror films.
The DVD has a few features which include the trailers for all of the Fangoria Fright Feat films, and Director/Producer Commentary. Overall, Dark House is your basic run of the mill B-movie with decent production value and some good visuals. It’s nothing great, but it’s a fun film to watch, especially if you grew up watching a lot of direct to video horror films similar to the ones put out by Fullmoon Pictures.
