Elite Entertainment has been picking up and releasing some great horror documentaries as of late. Last mount we got the Fearmakers collections from them ,which was a great DVD which featured episodes about some of the best horror and sci-fi filmmakers of the past hundred years or so. Creature Feature focuses on the sub genre’s of the horror and sci-fi genres.

Creature Feature is broken up into three pieces. The Beasts, The Machines and The Dead. The Beasts episode explores films that depict humans turning into animals, and the scientific theories behind whether or not humans can evolve into such creatures. The Machines episode, which was my favorite, shows scenes from films such as Blade runner, The Terminator and A.I. it also talks about scientific theories about the human race and how we might adapt a robot lifestyle or become one with a machine in the future. The Dead episode however has nothing to do with zombies at all but rather ghosts and religious and spiritual aspects that are depicted in films such as Poltergeist and Dante’s Inferno.

While I enjoyed this DVD, I was bothered by a few details. The episodes seem to be full of more movie scenes than they do of anything else. It kind of bothered me because the scenes would pop in and play full out in the middle of some of the narration. It just took away from the overall point that each film was trying to make. However what was being pointed out in each film is what I liked most. When a normal person thinks about horror films they think about a pointless movie that involves a lot of killing. When they think of a Sci-fi film, they think of some cheesy space adventure. What these documentaries point out is that these films are actually trying to make a difference in what they portray, that there is something about social issues and human kind in these films and that their not just about killing and spaceships.

Overall, I really can’t say more than I’ve said about this DVD. It’s really just a bunch of clips of horror films and people talking about what effect they have or might have on human kind. For the horror and sci-fi fans that are fans simply because we can see pass the gore, guts and spaceships and look for the true meaning in the films. This is a DVD well worth adding to your collection.
