I must admit I really thought that as a company Heretic Films was going to be another one of those direct to video labels that eventually everyone would avoid renting or buying their films. However unlike companies like Fullmoon and Brain Damage, Heretic Films picks the films they distribute wisely. “Cold Blood” is an example of that, this film is a good psychological thriller that managed to keep my eyes glued to the screen; which these days as we all know is a hard thing to do in the direct to video market.
“Cold Blood” has a unique plot. The film starts out with a big bang as the first shot consists of a women getting whacked in the forehead with a baseball bat. We then learn that her husband in a temporary fit of rage is the one that hit her and accidentally killed his own wife in the process. as he escapes his home for his sisters farm in the middle of nowhere, he realizes that he does in fact miss and still love his wife. However he begins to realize that someone or something is aware of what he’s doing and in order to bury his dark secret he’ll dispose of anyone in his path.
“Cold Blood” is a low budget film done right, its production value as far as the locations go was pretty basic, the whole film is pretty much shot at a farm house and the surrounding areas. The astrosphere the film brings with it is dark and tense. There are a few scenes that involve a body in a bath tub that gave me a chill just like the shower scene in Hitchcock’s “Psycho”. The acting is not all that bad, there are a few things within some of the performances that do call out bad acting, but overall the acting holds up enough to help the film move along. As far as effects go, “Cold Blood” hits it on the nail. There are some dam good make-up effects in this film that I was extremely impressed by. And the body of J.M.’s wife in the film looked as if they used a real corpse in the film.
Overall “Cold Blood” is a very impressive indie film and well worth checking out. The artwork on the DVD box cover is very great as well and is sure to catch anyones eye. In this case the box cover is great and so is the movie, so if you see it in your video store or in a friends DVD collection it’s well worth checking out. You can also buy the film though Heretic’s website (Link Above). An overall great thriller.
