“Candy Stripers” is about a group of hostel aliens who land in a small California town, however these aliens are not who they seem to be, and are on a mission to take over the earth. However the aliens in their quest take over the bodies of some candy stripers at the local hospital, turning them into sex crazed maniacs who are on the lookout for men to breed with to help their alien race take over the world. A group of injured basketball players are the only ones who know about the plan and must try to stop them from taking over the planet.
Ok so the plot sounds like a decent sci-fi b-movie, kind of reminds me of “Killer Clowns from Outer Space”. But in fact is more or less a rip off of another film titled “Decoys”, but I won’t go there. However this film has a cast full of former playboy playmates. However this film lacked in so many ways I don’t know where to begin.
First let’s start with the acting. I mean come on, with a script like this I can’t blame the actors for their performances you can only do so much. I don’t know what to say sometimes you just get actors on set that just don’t care, and then you get ones who do care. You can blame it on the director. It all really depends on where the mistakes were made before hand. In this case, I felt the dialogue was weak and the delivery of lines was just poor most of the time. Being a low budget film also factors into it as well, however I’ve seen films with budgets of five hundred bucks with better acting. That’s what you get sometimes when you have to pay SAG wages I guess.
Anyway the production value of the film is very good as well as the make-up effects. You really don’t get much of major alien creature action, but overall the production value of this film is good. I’ll give it that much.
Overall, I just could now believe how poor the acting and script was. I’m not one to really rip on these things but it just seemed to me that no one was taking this film seriously when they made it. Horror can be fun and campy sometimes and reviewers like myself know when it’s meant to be funny and campy, in this case it seemed to be a serious script that was just poorly executed.
