WOW! Doris Robert’s from “Everybody Loves Raymond” is in this flick, as well as a few other semi-known actors such as P.J. Soles (Devil’s Reject’s, Halloween, Carrie), Harve Presnell (Fargo, Face/Off) and Sonny Landhan for “Predator” . Anyway Blood Bath is anthology of short films told by guests of a dinner party whom are sharing their experiences with the occult. The whole film is kind of just like “Creepshow”, and even has that comic book like feel to it. Overall it’s just one big horror/comedy type film, with plenty of blood, death and bad make-up jobs.
Honesty, I’m up in the air about this film. Like I mentioned above it had this “Creepshow”, “Tales from the Darkside” type feel to it. But being made in the late 1970’s and the slow paced film making did make me lose my focus on the film at times. However there is one part that caught my eye which was a martial art’s like spoof story where a guy actually cuts off his limbs. The acting is one for the record, it’s kind of funny and the fire breathing armless guy is awesome. The ending is also one for the record as well, cause it’s just so bizarre. But that’s only one of the stories, there are plenty more, a total of about five or so.
The acting varies from story to story, I can’t say a lot it was great, some of it was, but most of the time it was just alright. Pretty much the best it could be for an indie film from the 70’s. However in the case of director Joel M. Reed, one must praise him for doing such a good job putting a film like this together, with such a small budget.
As far as effects go. Well lets just say that the make-up effects are pretty bad, especially for the demons, however for the time period when the film was made, the rest of the effects looked pretty decent. The set’s were noting great, but they did the job for this film despite it’s low budget.
Overall, “Blood Bath” is not a great film, but it’s not a bad one either. It holds it’s own and was a film that one might see as a the movie that was the low budget “Creepshow” of the seventies. Any fans of anthology horror should pick this one up to add to their DVD collection.
