With the year 2012 looming over us and false prophets claiming the end of the world is coming any day now, many of us fail to recognize the possible invasion of an alien species as a world ending experience. Hollywood sure thinks it is a possibility and has done so over the years with alien invasion films such as Independence Day, The War of the Worlds remake and most recently Skyline and this film Battle: Los Angeles.
I am one of those guys who love what conspiracy theorists have to say about why aliens from another world would come to planet earth. He has been mentioned in all the films listed above that the come for resources. In Battle: Los Angeles water is actually the thing the aliens are after as they use it to fuel not only their ships but all of their technology.
The plot for this film begins slowly and introduces all of the characters in the film first before all the action begins. The story revolves around a group of Marines that are sent on a mission to rescue civilians holding up at a local sheriff’s station when the alien invaders attack the coast of California. The platoon’s mission is extract any survivors and them retreat back to a local airport to regroup before going on an all out assault versus the attacking aliens. However, as fate would have it the plan fails and the platoon finds themselves as the last hope for the human race as they figure out what the aliens are here for and how to stop them.
The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack has a few features which include Behind the Battle, Aliens in L.A., Preparing for Battle, and Creating L.A. in L.A. Features exclusive to the Blu-ray disc include; Directing the Battle, Boot Camp and The Freeway Battle. There is also the Command Control feature where you can command the viewing by watching Picture-in-Picture, Storyboard Comparisons, Battle Points and more during the movie.
Battle: Los Angeles is a film that does drag a bit. The story is fun to watch but there is a lot of scenes in this film that could have been cut down for the sake of pacing. Other than it being a drawn out film it is entertaining and heart pounding. There are a lot of explosive pulse pounding scenes and the special and visual effects are really good. Overall from a filmmakers perspective it’s a film that is all over the place, from a movie fans view its nothing but a fun action packed alien thriller that entertains.
