ARTIFACTS is a film that I’m not really sure was meant for me. The film has appeared in many different film festivals and has even taken home a few awards at some of them. While it’s not the kind of film I would normally review it did hold it’s own as an independent sci-fi/horror film with an artistic like look.
The story behind this film is a bit hard to understand but at the same time it’s pretty much straight forward. The film is short and runs only about seventy five minutes. In a nutshell the film is about a girl named Kate who finds herself on the run from herself. What I mean is that their seems to be a doppelganger of sorts going on in this film where a double of Kate and her friends are out to kill them. She soon discovers that her and her friends have some kind of tracking artifact in their necks that their every move is being tracked by their doubles and the ones in charge of them. What transpires is a dark ride into the unknown with a shocking ending with a twist.
I’ll be the first to say that ARTIFACTS is not really the kind of film I would watch, it’s one of the films I would pass on if I saw it for sale or on the shelves of my local rental store. It’s one of those low budget independent films, with very low production value and a look that would bore the common movie goer. What ARTIFACTS is, is a film that would appeal to a certain audience. It has an artistic feel to it and it’s script is very well written, but it’s one of those stories that involves the viewer to pay attention to detail. It’s not an action packed movie at all, but it does pack a lot of suspense and mystery. I just don’t think it’s a film for everyone.
In a nutshell, I’m going to keep this review really short and sweet. I thought the film was very well written and the actors in the film gave very good performances, It’s production value was nothing special, and the story was a bit slow, but overall if you really get into the film, it’s not that bad. It’s really not the kind of film that I would watch, but the delivery of the story and the nice use of mood and shots, really worked well. I can honestly say that the filmmakers involved in making ARTIFACTS do have the talent to get their story across. But like I mentioned a few times, this is a film that I think only caters to a certain group of people. If your into dark sci-fi/horror like films that spend more time on developing a plot rather than delivering action packed gore scenes and over the top suspense; then you might like this film. For the gore hounds or people like me who need a bit more story and less confusion, I don’t think this is the kind of film you would want to watch. But overall, it’s not a bad little film and I give the filmmakers a lot of credit for putting this little film together.
