Films like this little gem; titled “Apartment 206” are what make independent worth watching. It’s so hard to film a low budget independent film, that actually can suck you in and keep your attention. “Apartment 206” does just that as your thrust into a place where your in the driver’s seat along for the ride with the characters of the film.
Without going into too much detail about the story, ( I don’t want to give the secret of the story away.) I have to say this is probably one of the best written Independent shorts I have ever seen. Gregory Zymet puts you in a world that makes you feel uncomfortable at first. You feel like, along with the characters that your trapped in an apartment that there is literally no way out of. The site and images you see though the television are those of your loved ones, but you have no way of communicating with them. The place is damp, dark and dirty. Zymet’s script gives you the feeling that a Hitchcock film does, your scared for the characters in the film and what the outcome will be. Questions and ideas about “What’s going on” and “Where are They” will run though your head. “Apartment 206” is a real brain teaser and this amazing script will having you guessing until the very end.
On so many levels this film is brilliant, the acting for example works so well in this film, you don’t have your typical Hollywood actors whom look like they don’t belong in the film, you don’t have your typical looking independent actors either (Friend, Family Members, with part written just for them). No! This film has actors that are typical everyday looking people. The acting and the people in general look real. There attitudes are those of real people you and I know from our everyday lives. from the fat cat lady that lives in the old house down the street, to the nerdy, suit wearing guy in his thirties who walks around town all day looking busy. The acting is real. Which means only one thing Zymet is a real, down to earth guy, that can direct people in such a great way that the audience watching the film can relate to the characters. That is a true talent that most directors fail at.
As far a effects and production design go, this team of Indie filmmakers went all out and spent every dime in their piggybanks to make sure the look and feel of this film was perfect. They will admit that they got lucky with finding most of the locations, but they also spent a lot of time and money making everything look just perfect.
Overall “Apartment 206” is one of the best Independent films running the festival circuit right now. I have high hopes for Writer/Director Gregory Zymet. Him and his team did one hell of a job putting this film together.
