“Andre the Butcher” originally titled “Dead Meat”, is one of those films that I personally am not sure if it was meant to make fun of bad independent horror films, or if it is in fact just a bad horror film. You see it’s a movie that starts off almost like a serious horror film, then get entirely bad to the point where your not sure if it’s meant to be funny. If in fact it was meant to be a comedy/horror, then I’ll admit that the film kind of has this “Scary Movie”spoof type flare to it. If it was meant to be a serious film however, then it just plain sucked. Plain and simple if this film was meant to be a serious piece for indie horror work, then every aspect of the film is poor.
However, I believe that it was meant to be a horror/comedy, that pokes fun at the indie horror/direct to video horror film market. At first I really did believe it was a serious indie horror film. Then the acting got bad, the plot got really weird, and there was all these odd sex scene, one which included a “No Nudity Clause” blackout over a girl’s breasts. A fat girl who could not stop eating, a man chopped in half from the waist down who would not die, really bad, yet funny dialogue, a goofy Sam Raimi look-alike (Jimbo), a girl who had issues with which way to swing, another girl who just liked to screw, two prison convicts, one who’s just a stupid asshole, and one’s who so bad he’s good, a perverted crooked sheriff, a spider fearing deputy, some old dude who just shows up in the middle of random scenes, and of course Ron Jeremy as Andre the Butcher. A guy who likes to eat human flesh, and for some reason no matter what you do to him, he just won’t die. Ok so the plot pretty much is this. Jimbo and the three girls are cheerleaders who are going to the Florida state cheerleading tournament or some shit, they beat the crap out of a rival team on there way there for calling the one girl (Christy) fat. They also mess up their vehicle as well, then our crew get’s into a car accident themselves because Jimbo can’t get road head and keep his eyes on the road at the same time. They all then leave the car to get some help when they come across a house in the middle of nowhere. Meanwhile a few inmates from a local prison have escaped and are being chased by the sheriff dept. Pretty much in a nutshell they all end up at this house in the middle of nowhere, which turns out to be Andre the Butchers house, and the basic horror plot begins. However this plot is full of cheap jokes and dirty punch lines.
“Andre the Butcher” is like Ed Wood’s “Plan 9 from Outer Space”. It’s so bad that’s its good. But the filmmakers never really establish for the audience that the film is just one big horrific joke. I got it towards the end that the film was poking fun at indie horror. But I don’t think that the average person renting this film would think that. Really the line that made me realize it was one big joke was a small monologue towards the end of the film when one of the escaped inmates (Hoss) talks about going to Mexico. That was classic, I give the writer credit for that one, it had me rolling on the floor. The acting is so bad in this film that it’s actually good. What I mean is that the actors did a good job acting bad, if that makes sense to you. The effects were poor, but were obviously done that way for comedic purposes.
So overall, you can see I am a bit mixed about this film. If it was meant to be one big joke, and I’m almost sure it was. Then if your one of the many horror fans who can’t stand half of the crap that’s put on video, then you’ll understand the jokes and have a blast watching this film. And well, let me put it this way, if your looking for a balls to the wall scary horror film, well then “Andre the Butcher” is not for you. I liked the jokes and thought the film was overall entertaining, I just felt that there should of been more clues at the beginning of the film to classify it as being a serious horror/comedy.
