This movie was great! I tell ya folks, there has been some great films coming out of South Korea this year from Tartan Video USA. “Acacia” reminds me of a film I used to watch back in Junior High called “The Guardian”, although the stories are different. But they both have a haunted tree that has a need for kids for some reason.
In “Acacia” the film revolves around a young boy named Jin-sung and his adoptive parents, the boy is shy and spends much of his time playing in the backyard by a dead acacia tree. When his adoptive mother miraculously becomes pregnant, Jin-sung begins to distance himself from his new parents and spends more time in the yard with the dead tree, however the more time he spends with the tree the more the tree starts coming back life, blooming new leaves and flowers. However, as tree begins to flourish bad things start to happen within the household that Jim-sung and his new family live in.
I won’t be surprised if an American remake is made of this film, the story is original and hip and has everything essential for what it takes to be a good horror film. The acting is pretty good and the directing even better, I loved the use of shots and visuals throughout the film. The effects were pretty freaky as well, we get a bloody baby, a women with no face giving birth and plenty of blood.
Overall probably one of the better films I’ve seen this year, Tartan Video has been pricking up some great Asian titles for their Asian Extreme Label and Acacia fits right there with the rest of them. This film is a must buy for all fans of Asian cinema.
