A few years ago I picked up a book called Freak Show at my local book store by writer Bryan Smith. Circus horror stories have always intrigued me. However, being someone who fears invasion from beings from outer space and other dimensions, I had no clue what I was in for. Now! I never did a write up for Freak Show, but it was without a doubt one of the most fascinating and freighting books I ever read. So when Delirium had a copy of Bryan Smith’s Bloodrush available for review, I quickly pounced on it.

Bloodrush is a vampire story that I don’t want to say is original in that it’s something we all haven’t read or seen before in terms of vampire stories and theology. Yet the concept and idea of this story is out of the world and one that will suck you in right away.

Without giving too much of the story away; Bloodrush is about a guy named David that while in a shopping mall makes a deal with a female vampire named Narcisa. Next thing he knows he’s in a cave littered with bodies, some alive, the majority dead. After much debate with Narcisa, David soon finds himself as a vampire. Yet, he is not free. He becomes a vampire slave to his new mistress. Narcisa can read his mind and knows that he misses his fiancé. The only way to make him forget his old life and embrace his new one is to kill his past. That’s what the plan turns out to be, as Narcisa and David make there way to his fiancé’s parents house and do some slaughtering at a local diner on the way.

I am known for not being a big fan of vampire books and especially films. However recently I’ve read a lot of great vampire books. Bloodrush is another one to add to that short list. This was a story that was a quick read. I finished it one sitting. It is well worth the time to check out. It is extremely well written and as with the past stories I’ve read from Smith he leaves the reader on the edge of the seat and feeling very uncomfortable. This is one vampire story that is a must for all fans of vampire fiction.
