After all the years and hype I heard about this film, I am sorry to say that I, myself have never been so disappointed about a film in my life. The problem is that “Man Thing” was promoted on the web for about two years. Early pictures of the film and all the hype made it seem like it was going to be one hell of a horror/fantasy film based on the marvel comic book. Now I never laid eyes on the comic book before, but the images I saw had me convinced that this was going to be a great film. Then came the delays, it seemed like “Man Thing” was going to get big theatrical release with all the whistles and bell, then I heard of a limited release, then I heard Sci-fi channel, which is were it finally made it’s premiere, and for good reason.
The story is kind of weird, there something living in the swamp that just wants to kill everyone and everything in it’s path. It’s not really explained why this “Man Thing” is killing or how he came to be. What we do know is that the land on which he dwells is under development. A power plant is being put there, that is dumping chemicals into the swamp. The small town folks are all against it, except for a select few, and there is a new sheriff in town who has no clue about what’s going on, just that people are ending up dead for strange reasons. The plot is very complicated and the script is very loopy. The story is not told too clearly.
Surprisingly the acting in the film is not really that bad, I mean it’s nothing great either lets face the facts here, but it was bearable. Probably the best actor in the film was the “Man-Thing” himself which was nothing but CGI. Speaking of CGI the effects are where the problem lied in this film.
The make-up effects and the dead bodies were pretty cool, although in some of the shots you can tell that the bodes are just special effect latex corpses. Blame it on bad lighting or the limited budget, but what this film needed was good CGI and Make-up effects to be better, and it was obviously this is what made the film look bad. If the film was done the right way, and the money was spent to make the effects better, I think “Man-Thing” could of been somewhat better.
So overall, I myself was very disappointed. Although the “Man-Thing” comic is probably not the most popular marvel comic book, I think at least they owe the fans of the book a better film adaptation than what they gave them. I am by no means a fan of the comic book, but the “Man-Thing” seems like one cool ass character that was totally put to shame in this film. With proper funding and a better script I think this film could of been good, but that was not the case here. Sorry folks, Not a big fan of this one.
