Alright, So I myself have finally realized that I watch way to many horror films. I got this DVD in the mail and knew the title sounded very familiar. But I figured there are probably a few films that are titled “All Souls Day” as it seems like just one of those titles. Turns out when I popped this sucker into the disc player, that I did in fact see this film on the Sci-fi Channel over the summer. Truth is it’s much better on DVD than on cable but not by much.
The DVD is “uncut and uncensored” however don’t think it’s that much better, as I stated above. The story is for the most part all over the place. The beginning is a bit confusing as it jumps around between three different time periods, however when the film comes to the present day, it’s pretty much a give in as to what is going on. Pretty much this film is about a group of college kids who get stuck in a town that is cursed. On All Souls Day every year the dead rise and feast on the all the humans they can get there hands on. Sounds decent right? Well not really.
First off I’ve seen better acting in a school play. With the exception of the cameo roles, I thought the acting was bad. Now I know I’m usually nice about this kind of thing, but I could not get over how fake the performances of our main cast seemed. I mean it was either bad directing on the directors part, or the actors just needed a pay check and did not care for the script at all. Something tells me it had to do with the script, because that was one thing I really didn’t care much for.
The effects were alright, I mean the zombies were not your typical “Romero” looking zombies, in fact they seemed more like a European zombie flick, zombie. There is some blood and some decent kills in the flick, but nothing that we all haven’t seen before.
Probably the best part of this film was the very beginning and all the scenes that involved zombies. However there seemed to be more scenes that involved drinking wine and talking about pointless stuff, than there were scenes with zombies in them.
Overall I was disappointed with such a promising cast I figured it would of been a lot better, however I felt like the film had many flaws and while watching the film I did not get the feel that I get with most horror films. I felt like I was watching actors who were just not taking their roles seriously and the effect of the film just did not work for me.
