As of late I really have found my taste for Asian horror films to be on a downturn. At the beginning of the century I was all about the Asian horror film, as it seemed that films like RINGU (The Ring), Gin gwai (THE EYE) and even the likes of OLDBOY and A TALE OF TWO SISTERS to name a few; where the Asian films to look out for. I enjoyed almost anything that came out of the ASIAN film market, but as of the past year or so nothing has really caught my eye enough for me to drool over. VOICES is another one to add to that pile. It seemed almost as if this is the KOREAN re-imaging of FINAL DESTINATION, with a different twist of course.
Based on a best selling comic book series, VOICES is about a young girl whom begins to think death is after her. She at first witness a family member killed at a wedding where the groom killed the bride. She later finds out that her aunt has been stabbed to death. She then has a dream where she is told that she is next. It seems that’s the case, as every one around her starts to go crazy and kill other people as well as one another. Not knowing who to trust, she goes on the run trying to figure out who she can trust and who to stay away from while she tries to unravel the mystery behind it all.
I can’t get to deep into this one mainly because I found it hard to follow all the subtitles and the crazy story at the same time. While the plot is pretty straight forward I didn’t really find myself getting to into it. The story is alright, and from what I gathered the dialogue seemed to be OK, but I can swear that whoever wrote this script really liked FINAL DESTINATION so much they decided to do a spin off. Of course I could be wrong being that this is based on a comic book, but I couldn’t get that out of my mind. To me it seemed liked the same old typical Asian horror film with nothing more to add to the genre. It begins and ends just like all Asian horror films seem to end. You get my drift, the unstoppable force that no one can make go away. It applies to this one as well.
I don’t want to go crazy on this movie. It’s your typical basic horror film with an unoriginal plot that only takes from other films we’ve seen before. it does have some pretty cool scenes such as one where blood is coving half a room in a water type effect and a ghost comes down though the bloody water to tell the lead character she’s next to die. Sure there is plenty of bloody gore filled scenes. One in particular to FINAL DESTINATION where a girl gets killed by a bus. (She thrown into it). But as if that does not say how unoriginal the movie is right there then I don’t know what to tell you.
Overall, Its nothing new. We’ve seen a dozen movies just like this one. Some horror fans might enjoy it for it’s blood and guts, but the story is something you’ve seen before, and I can’t stress that enough. The DVD is pretty much bare bones but does include more of the Miss Horrorfest Webisodes, and it has English and Spanish subtitles.
