Scott Sigler does not pump out novels month after month. He is one of those writers that spend a lot of time researching a topic for his next novel before he writes it. I have read three of his previous titles. All of which were extremely well written and dare I say educational in a science fiction/factual way. None the less, everything I have read from Scott Sigler has been excellent. The same can be said for this book; Nocturnal.

Now! There is a lot going on in Nocturnal. The novel has a lot of amazing characters that are well developed. In fact, I don’t think I have ever read a novel with this much character development. The story is out of this world great, and I’m going to try my best to explain some of it without giving a lot of the plot away.

Pookie Chang and Bryan Clauser are two homicide detectives in San Francisco. They are good cops that have a great relationship with one another. Bryan is a badass nicknamed The Terminator for all the bad guys he has shot and killed while on duty. He is also experiencing some odd nightmares when he goes to sleep. The two cops usually work the night shift, but as of recent have been helping with a case during the day.

Angie is a homeless man that has awakens in a domed white room with a chain around his neck. Next to him is a family of illegal immigrants and a Chinese man that are also chained up. The bars to the room open and masked men and a short fat woman appear. Each day they take one person out of the room and they never return.

Rex is a thirteen year old boy that lives with his mother. His mother can’t stand him and treats him like crap. The kids in school treat him much worse. A small gang of kids called BOYCO beat him up daily. When Rex begins to draw pictures of them all cut up into pieces they beat him up more. However, Rex will eventually find out that there is more to his life than he has ever known.

Robin is a medical examiner at the cities medical examiner office. When her boss suffers a heart attack Robin is asked to take over his position as chief medical examiner. She is also the ex-girl friend of Brian Clauser. The body that is about to come though the door will also changes her career when she makes a starling discovery.

All of these characters are about to become part of something big, a case that has been haunting the city of San Francisco for over forty years. There has been a cover up of past cases. The people with the power have seen to this. As the reader you are about to embark of a case along with these characters that reveal something so dark, that you might not believe what you’re reading. The thing about this book is that along with the characters you discover the mystery along with them, one that reveal a nightmare that just sucks you in and keep you reading to the very end.

I a m not going to give away what happens in this novel. I refuse too. However if you a fan of horror and mystery this is a novel that goes so deep in both character development and plot that you will be hooked from the first page. Your just going to have to take my world for it. Nocturnal is a masterpiece and is by far the best book that Scott Sigler has ever written. I know I say that about all his books, but just like a fine wine his work gets better with age. You would be doing yourself a great disservice by not picking this novel up. This is Scott Sigler at his very best.
