I had never heard of either L.H. Maynard or M.P.N. Sims until this book hit my doorstep a few weeks ago. At first glance I thought it was just going to be another one of those books without an interesting story so I threw it aside with all the other books that get sent to me and figured I’d come back to it when I had the time. The next day I was craving something new and different to read, so I rummaged though that small pile and then I saw Brian Keene’s praise on the cover of the book and I knew then that I was in for something special.
Demon Eyes is a book that slowly builds you towards the horror elements rather than rushing you right into it. It thrives more on character development than it does story, however its the characters that are in the drivers seat that make this story work. It’s not everyday that you get two writers whom work on books together and are able to write a book that has such a tight story where both writers seem to be on the same page as to how the story should present itself.
The book follows the life of a girl named Emma who works for a corporation run by Alex Keltner, a wealthy man known worldwide. When Emma is asked to interview for the job of Alex’s new assistant she quickly jumps at the chance, but not before checking in with her lover Helen, who agrees that it would be a good opportunity for Emma. Alex is quickly impressed with Emma and gives her the job right away. Emma is then asked by Alex to accompany him at his secluded estate where some of the most powerful people in the business world will be there as his guests. However Emma is in for a terrorizing time as Alex Keltner and his guests are not what they seem to be.
In order for me not to give the story away, I’m going to leave you the reader with just one simple task: go buy this book and see for yourself just how great of a read it is. The book is very straight forward with a great story and wonderful character development. The story also has one hell of a shocking and surprising ending. L.H. Maynard and M.P.N. Sims are a duo of talent to be weakened with. I really enjoyed this book and it’s one hell of a read.
