If you have been visiting my site for a while, you know that I have never been a big fan of any product released by Brain Damage Films. At one point they were sending screeners to me and then I stopped getting them, while Cannibal Cam started to get them. Not that I really minded being that “Goth” is the only film I really cared for from their library.
Well “Branded” came to me courtesy of one of the films actresses Darla Enlow, now Darla told me that it was not a film of just a bunch of friends jumping around making a pointless horror film. And she was Right! “Branded” is a very well shot film and although it’s sets are not top notch they are believable. The locations worked and the camera was pretty well used in creating the feel for the film. However it’s noticeable that the film was shot on digital, and at times it did feel a bit like a home movie.
Now what turned me off about this film was it’s pacing, I found this film to be to slow of a movie for my liking and the acting also turned me off. Not that the acting was incredibility bad or anything, I mean it was alright, but at times it seemed very flat. The only performance that I felt stood out the best was in fact Darla Enlow’s, not only is she a great looking gal, she not that bad of an actress. The problem here was she “out acted” everyone else, even with the limited screen time she had.
Overall story wise it was a very hard film for me to get though, and like most films released by “Brain Damage” I was surprised that I didn’t just turn it off. Not because of the film itself but because of the dam large “For Screening Purposes Only” that ran throughout the whole picture. (Next time make it smaller and under the picture.) However the free tootsie rolls that Darla was so nice to include in the press kit helped me though. Thanks Darla for the free candy.
