I have a friend who has worked with Joe Parda on many films and is a good friend of his, I personally Have never meet the man but have had the opportunity to review a film he made a few years ago call “Machines of Love and Hate” which has yet to find a market here in the U.S., why I don’t know cause I found it to be a pretty good flick. Well his film “5 Dead on a Crimson Canvas” is a pretty decent flick as well, I’m guessing that it must have been one his first films being that it was made in 1996. The film is a tribute to the Italian horror genre of the 70’s and 80’s and has the feel and style of an Argento or Bava flick. Now on a personal level I can’t say that Italian horror has always been my favorite, but this film fits the bill and is great and true in the way of style and production value, even keeping it’s grainy film look to help really keep the feel and over all texture of the film.

In terms of story the film actually sounds like an Argento film, with it’s stylish ways of killing and use of blood, you’ll even find a tribute to Hitchcock as there is a shower scene at the beginning ala “Psycho”. the acting is a little rough, but it hold up, the atmosphere of the film is dark and uncomfortable at times. And one thing I always liked about Parda’s films is that he always has these weird fucked up segments of people doing weird things, also I noticed that he got as thing with S&M clothes as well. Guess I’ll have to ask him about it when I meet the man. Overall “5 Dead on Crimson Canvas” Is a trippy film that is sure to please any fan of Argento and Bava films..
