Dark Roots by Sheldon Higdon is a masterfully crafted serial killer story. It begins with Benjamin Cole’s father committing suicide, and Benjamin has inherited the farm. When he goes home he finds a rundown place needing a lot of repair and as he starts to renovate, he knocks down a wall in the living room, only to find pictures of missing children. This shocking discovery leads Benjamin down a rabbit hole of an investigation, and time begins to run out when his girlfriend’s son is kidnapped. Benjamin must learn the truth about who his family really is and what family means.
I loved this story. It was a fast paced-read and so twisted. I couldn’t get to the next page quick enough and Higdon did a great job of disguising the true killer. If you love murder mysteries, you will want to pick up this book. I was shocked by the ending.
