Bill lives in a world of monsters. Nobody is sure if they are real or just something made up to keep people in line, but most people don’t take chances. Bill lives his life like everyone else; he goes from job to job so he can drink, keeping to himself in a boarding house.

One night he sees a dead boy in one of the neighboring rooms, and is confused when he notices a blue light emanating from the boy. Upon closer inspection, Bill realizes it’s a tiny bluebird. Shaken once it disappears, he finds comfort in the arms of his landlady.

The next day, Bill discovers he can see a light fluttering in every person’s chest except his own. Despondent, he collapses drunk in an alley, but is set upon by one of the monsters he wasn’t sure he believed was real. And then a miracle happens.

There’s a Bluebird in My Heart is the latest in the White Noise Press chapbook series. As always, the quality of the chapbook is superb; beautiful in its design and production. The story is just as beautiful – it’s practically poetry, painting clear and colorful images in the reader’s mind. Gary McMahon is a wonderful writer, and this story was a joy to read.
