Noah Berkley’s life completely changes right before his thirteenth birthday when his grandfather dies and his parents split up. Noah and his dad move into his grandfather’s house, the very house where his dad grew up.

Still reeling from his beloved grandfather’s death, Noah realizes his dad is already dating a neighbor, Erin, and her son Derek, who is Noah’s age, proves himself to be a jerk. But there is no getting away from Derek, and Noah finds himself getting into trouble against his will. Shortly after they break into their teacher’s house, Noah is drawn into the mystery of several town children’s disappearances when he discovers the teacher’s son was one of them.

Noah meets his neighbor Jenny Sparrow, and develops a huge crush on her. But life isn’t easy; being the new kid in school makes him a target for bullies, his dad always seems to be angry with him, he misses his mom, and kids start disappearing again.

Nothing Lasting is a great story told very well; the characters and setting engaged me right away. Any coming-of-age horror story will be compared to King’s “The Body,” but Nothing Lasting stands on its own. There are several twists and turns throughout, as well as an ending that surprised me, but was perfect for the story.

This is the first novel I’ve read by Glen Krisch, and I’m looking forward to reading his other work.
