I’m one of those guys who read books, not by what the cover looks like, but by what people tell me about the book or author. I had never heard of Michael Laimo before I met him on Myspace.com. Little did I know that this great and exceptional Horror writer only live a few towns north of me. As some of you might recall we ran a contest for Laimo’s newest book “The Demonologist” last month. That contest was the most successful contest in the history of this website with close to over seven hundred responses. I figured if this man has a following like this I must find a book of his and read it. So thus, I went off to the nearest book store and browsed the horror section for one of his novels. Now I did not have a copy of “The Demonologist” in my possession, as all contest copies were sent to my buddy “The Jinx” who was running the giveaway. So while in the bookstore I came across only one book with Laimo’s name on it. That was “Deep in the Darkness” and shit I tell you all, this book was worth more than the 8 bucks I paid for the paperback version.

The only way to describe Laimo’s work is to call him the Alfred Hitchcock of horror writers. “Deep in the Darkness” is so suspenseful, that you can’t help yourself from moving onto the next chapter. His style of writing teases you so much, that with each passing the chapter is like a having a piece of cake in front you and being told you can’t eat it. It’s nothing but top notch suspense that I guarantee you won’t put this book down.

“Deep in the Darkness” in a nutshell is about a young doctor named Michael Cayle whom lives and works in New York City. He has a wife and young daughter and wants nothing but the best for them. When the opportunity presents itself, he is offered his own practice, however Michael and his family will have to adapt a new lifestyle in the remote New England town of Ashborough, and leave their lives in the city behind. With his wife’s support they all move to the small town of Ashborough, surrounded by acres and acres of forests and mountains, only to find out that the town holds a strange and bizarre mystery, that cannot be easily solved. Deep in the Darkness of the woods in their backyard Michael starts to see golden eyes looking back at him. At first he thinks it’s just his mind playing tricks on him, but soon enough he will find out there’s a lot of strange things going on in the woods and in the town of Ashborough. Things full of horror and terror beyond anyone imagination.

The character of Michael is our hero in this book, we feel everything though him, envision the story though his eyes. Laimo’s is a master at developing characters, while reading this book I felt I know each character’s life history from birth to the present. I mean by books end you’ll be fighting right along with Dr. Michael Cayle to the very end.
With all that said I’ve felt I’ve said a little more than I should. In all honesty I don’t want to give the story away. This book is so dam great, I just want anyone who’s not read it to just go pick up a copy and read it. I’m telling ya, you won’t be disappointed, if anything you won’t be able to finish this book due to fear if anything.
Overall Michael Laimo is a new master of horror writing all his own. And the way Dorchester Publishing and Leasure Books are picking up new writers material everyday, I have to give them a big thumbs up for picking nothing but the best horror talent out there when it comes to writing the best horror out there. Laimo’s “Deep in the Darkness” is a must read for all horror fans.

On a side note: “Deep in the Darkness” is now being written into a screenplay and being developed into a motion picture. Look for a release date for the film as early as 2007.
