MTI Video has picked themselves up a winner with this film. The Hazing is a great low budget horror film that has a feel of those straight to video films you used to rent during the 80’s. God I miss VHS horror of the 80’s. You can see real influence of such films as “Evil Dead” and “Night of the Demons” in this film, and it has some great actors such as Brad Douif (Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, Voice of Chucky in Child’s Play films. ) Brooke Burke who despite her wild on “E” TV show played her part well in this film, and one of my favorite b-movie actresses Tiffany Shepis.
The Hazing is about a group of college students who plan to initiate new frat members in a possessed home, by rigging the house with haunted house props and so on, however their is a real evil in the house that starts to take over and the innocent prank turn into a bloody mess.
The acting is good, it may not seem to be but I think the director had his reasons for directing his actors the way he did. (I felt what he was doing anyway.) I’m pretty sure Rolfe Kanefsky wanted them to act like they were in a horror film from those 80’s video days but I could be wrong. The production value was top notch, and the feel of the film had a nice sharp look, yet made the feel of the film look good, while having it good scares. We had some CGI effects that were really good for a film with a low budget. We also had some good make-up and animatronics, ( a crazy tongue, which to me seemed like an ode to Evil Dead, as it had that feel to it).
Overall it’s a film with a crazy story that works and like I said above it has the feel of such films like “Night of the Demons” and “Evil Dead”. A great straight to video film that I hope gets some kind of following, It’s a great flick and deserves some attention.
