THE DEVIL’S CHAIR is a film that I guess you need to be just like the character in this film to really take to the approach of what’s going on. It’s a film that you really need to pay attention to grasp the concept, and while the film at times did go a bit slow for me and yes, I got bored at times. It’s still a film that towards it’s ending becomes one hell of a ride.

The film is about this guy named Nick West, a mental patent who’s been put in an insane asylum after he claims his girlfriend was killed by a chair in an abandon mental hospital while the both of them were masturbating together and tripping on acid. Years later Nicks psychologist, who happens to be a very smart college professor as well, takes Nick and his students back to the scene of the crime so they can study Nicks effects, and find out the truth behind the mysteries of his story. However they soon find out that Nick is not so crazy and that the chair is a tortuous portal to hell where it’s victims are tortured by a demon with a thirst for human blood and suffering.

I actually thought the script for this film was very well written. While the characters were not that developed the storyline was at least original to a point and the dialogue was very well written. In a way the film kind of reminded me of something that directors like Dante Tomaselli or Brad Anderson would of wrote and directed. It has that weirdness like films like HORROR and SESSION 9 have. except with a lot more blood. The film was written by Simon Boyes and Adam Mason around the same time the both of them went on to write and direct BROKEN together which got some critical acclaim and was released recently here in the states by Dimension Extreme. Adam Mason however did direct this film alone however leaving his partner Simon Boyes to just the co-writing duties on this film. But the two seem to be a team when it comes to making films together.

The films overall production value is decent, it has some fare but yet decent looking location and sets that are decorated enough as to give the look and feel that your in a place that would make you feel uncomfortable if you were truly right there with the characters. The visual and special effects are what really give the film it’s gritty look. Just like BROKEN there is plenty of blood and gore to go around in this one, but just don’t expect the demon to look like anything great. Not to say that it looks bad, but it has the look of the bastard child of the half breed alien in ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM and Pan from PAN’S LABYRINTH. On the on the hand the films acting is also pretty decent, but nothing to special.

Overall, THE DEVIL’S CHAIR is a decent Psychological horror film. It’s not the greatest, but the story has an original twist to it and it give fans of horror film a little bit of what everyone wants in a horror film. A decent story, some good special effects, a crazy psycho killer, a Pan/Alien like Demon, and some torture. It does start off a little slow, but in the end it turns into one hell of a nightmare. Overall it’s not the greatest of horror films but I’m sure the majority of horror fans will like this one. Especially if you enjoyed Boyes and Mason’s other film BROKEN.
