Night of the Werewolf is one of those films that has a lot going on. The plot has a lot of character and little side plots that all twist together to make an action packed entertaining horror film. One thing I really appreciate about this DVD is the high quality transfers to HD. The picture quality is top notch and it is probably one of the best transfer I’ve ever seen from film to DVD.
Night of the Werewolf was filmed in a real castle in Spain. The movie has a lot of offer and the story can be somewhat complexed at times. The film is pretty much about a guy who has the curse of a werewolf upon him and turns at the night time partially when the moon is full, although that part is rarely mentioned. Then on the other hand we have a group of vampire women lead by a vampire countess. In a nutshell, the two pretty much battle it out throughout the while film.
I’m going to keep this review short, because typically I wouldn’t watch a film like this; I’ve never been to particularly interested in films that to me always seemed to be cross the Atlantic rip off’s of the American classic horror films. But in the case of this film, I will say that it more or less gained my respect for being more like a Hammer film, for which I’ve always admired most of the titles released though Hammer Studios. In truth if you love any of the classic hammer movies your going to love this film. I actually think that it’s fits right up there with some of the late hammer titles.
The script for this film is one of complexity; there is a lot going on, but enough for the normal movie fan to understand and enjoy. The script packs a lot of horror, action and even a bit of comedy. So there is enough for everyone to go around, and because the script is so full of these many elements and pieces of different genres, it main focus is still the element of horror.
The acting in the film surprisingly enough is not all that bad. I mean this is a film that was shot overseas where many of the actors usually have plenty of experience in theater and film. So it no surprise to me that the actors were as good as they were, taking this crazy script and doing their best to make the film what it is.
Where the film has it flaws is in it’s cheap make-up effects and production value. While the production value is not all that bad, some of the props and sets seem plain and boring. I found the make-up effects to be the weakest link in this film. The Werewolf mask looked like dead deer fur adhered to the actors face. And the blood and bite marks given to the victims by the vampire women in the film, all looked like that of a Halloween make-up kit.
Overall, I can’t say that Night of the Werewolf is the best film, but it’s very entertaining and is better than most of the over sea’s b-movies from the early nineteen eighties. It has a lot of fun entertaining horror elements to it, that I’m sure the greatest of genre fans will enjoy.
