Wrestling Entertainment it not what it used to be. I stopped watching wrestling when the WWE monopolized the industry by buying out its competition back in the late nineties. After the Stone Cold era ended in the WWE and all the wrestling heroes of the eighties and nineties retired or were at the end of their careers I stopped watching. Now the industry seems to be filled with guys who have no gimmick and all look the same. It does not seem fun anymore. I know most people that are into professional wrestling are also into horror films; so what better way then to put the two together, with a movie titles Monster Brawl.

So by now, just like me your saying “You got to be kidding me!” Yeah, I thought the same thing and trust me after watching this movie I still feel the same way. Monster Brawl is a movie for fans that love their horror and love their wrestling.

The plot is simple. What if we gathered some of the world’s favorite monsters set up a wrestling ring in a graveyard and let them fight it out to the death. Commentary included mangers, referee, back stories and all. That is pretty much the plot of the whole movie. It is basically Monday Night Raw with monsters and gore.

Obviously I can’t look at Monster Brawl like a serious piece of cinematic art. It is basically a B-movie for wrestling fans. However, don’t let concept of the movie trick your brain into thinking this might be a movie with bad production value. One of the key factors this film has going for it is the make-up effects and visuals. The title sequences and monster stats really give the film that wrestling/boxing shows feel, and the narration by Lance Henrikson give the film this Mortal Kombat feel. The acting is nothing special and the wrestling is more of an old school style than the high flying acrobatics we see today, but overall the movie holds it’s own with good editing, set design and overall production value.

The Blu-ray disc has a few special features which include Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Jesse Thomas Cook and Producers Matt Wiele and John Geddes, A behind the scenes Featurette and the films outtakes.

Overall, Monster Brawl is a film that is mainly made for fans of both horror and wrestling. It has some of your favorite horror monsters such as The Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster’s Cyclops, The Mummy and many more monsters battling it out for the monster world championship. It is one of those movies where I don’t want to give it a bad review because, the production value and creativity is there, but at the same time it kind of one of those movies that is made for fans of both the horror and the sport. If you like horror and you love watching wrestling, then this is the movie for you.
