“Love Story” is a short film, that is in fact a student film. Now my feelings about student films are that the majority of them just plan suck ass. I myself every once in a while pop in some of the old student films I made in college and realize that although my shots and editing were good, the story and the production value sucked ass. But then again I didn’t even spend more than twenty bucks to make the dam things, and that in fact goes for most student films. However there will always be that certain student film that will stand out, because patience and perseverance help make what could of been a bad student film a good one. Such is the case with this short picture “Love Story”. Now I’m sure the budget was a bit more and Director Rory Abel, was able to get his hands on some decent equipment as well. But all the same I’m sure “Love Story” was the best film made in Rory’s whole class.

“Love Story” is about a young guy, with a typical nine to five job, who likes to kidnap, rape and kill any hot girl he can get his hands on. However he’s more of a lover than a killer as he keeps the girls around for a while until they either get to smart for him to keep around or if he gets bored of them. He also likes to keep newspaper clippings of all the girls he’s kidnapped and killed posted on his walls. American Psycho comes to mind when watching this film, as this guy is very much a Patrick Bateman type. So anyway this new chick he’s got laying around in his apartment is different than all the rest, and it seems he’s falling for her, however she just wants to get the fuck out of the place, and in a ala Stephen King’s Misery way tries everything she can do to escape. There is even one scene in this film that involves a finger, which I won’t give away, but it’s just as hard to watch as the scene in Misery where Annie Wilkes breaks Paul Sheldon legs.

I was very impressed by how well this film was produced, in all seriousness it is probably one of the best student films I’ve ever seen. It was shot very and even the effects were pretty good, as well as the editing. The acting could of been better, as I felt in some scenes that the actors kind of lost focus and went out of character. But overall their performances were pretty dam good for a student film. I think as a director Rory Abel did a dam good job for what is probably one of his first short films. And the DVD includes one of the best extras ever, its something I’m sure all low budget filmmakers run into is the annoying neighbors. But when the neighbors are old southern African American folks who just want to watch TV loud, you got yourself a problem, and poor Rory got the third degree from them. Sorry Rory, but that was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. And the fact that your crew was laughing their asses off made it even better.

Overall “Love Story” is a great short film, and well worth checking out. I’m sure it will make it’s run in festivals so if comes to your town be sure to check it out.
