There are just some movies that I am personally not meant to watch, and while I mentioned this before; ever since I became a father films that involve babies, pregnant women and young children getting harmed have really hit a nerve with me. So the plot for this film, and not to mention the title and DVD Box art really had me on nerve when it came to watching this one.

Inside begins with a young pregnant women and her husband driving in a car when they get into a horrible car accident. The women’s husband dies, but her and the baby are ok. Months pass and it’s Christmas time, the women who’s name is Sarah is still upset over the loss of her husband. On Christmas Eve while home alone a women mysteriously appears at her door, however this women is not there to befriend Sarah, she is there to kill her. Locked in a bathroom, Sarah fights to save her and and her unborn child’s’ s life, as each and every person that comes to her rescue is killed by this madwomen in her house. Sarah soon realizes that the only way she will get out of this mess alive is to confront the mad women herself.

The script for Inside is actually very good, full of very creepy and suspenseful scenes, the mood of the script is the same as the character of Sarah and it’s really effective in getting it’s point across. the movie is in French, which makes it’s hard for me to really comment on the dialogue, however from the subtitles I read it seemed to be very well written. When it came to character development, we really only got to know Sarah, as the madwomen was pretty much left a mystery up until the very end, and most of the supporting characters were there to be killed off. But for the most part the script was pretty effective.

The acting in this film was very good and went hand in hand with the great direction. Much credit goes to directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury for the great film they managed to put together and for getting the actors to do some of the most hardcore acting of their careers. There directing work was so good that both have recently been hired to direct the remake of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser. The lead actors in this film’s performance stand out the most, Alysson Paradis whom plays Sarah is very effective in her role, as well as Béatrice Dalle whom plays the madwomen. The supporting cast is also very good for the short screen time they get.

The film has some great production value. While it’s simple with it’s sets and art direction. The mood and tone set for the film are one of gloom where we not only feel the stress and sadness of Sarah after she loses her husband, but we are also forced to feel her stress when she is under attack by the madwomen. The special effects in this film are really over the top and very realistic. Inside is a brutal film with a lot of very realistic effects. It’s a movie that make Hostel and Saw look like a children’s movie.

Overall, Inside is film that has the suspense of a Hitchcock film, but the brutality of films like Hostel, Audition and Saw, except with twice the gore and twice the blood. Its no wonder so many horror fans and critics think this is one of the most brutal horror films ever made. I won’t go as far as saying it’s the scariest film I’ve ever seen, but it sure as hell is shocking and relentless.
