on Coscarelli’s Incident On and Off A Mountain Road, was the Masters of Horror Episode that interested me the most when I first go wind about the series. The character of the so called “Mountain man” and hid psychical appearance is what caught my eye. However the movie turned out to be very similar to that of Wrong Turn.

The film starts off with a women who’s driving on the rural wooded mountain top back road, when an accident occurs. The women whom is alright looks for help after her cell phone fails her. As she looks to see if the person in the other car is alright, she see a man on the lower side of the mountain, only to find out that he is not a friendly guy. Using her survival skills, that we later find out is something her husband taught her. She fights this mountain man, and also manages to make her way into his mountain hideaway, where most of the murder and mayhem begins, and our final battle takes place. However when the film comes to it’s conclusion we also find out that there is also a surprising ending with a neat little twist.

The story jumps back in forth between what’s going on in the mountain, and the survival lessons and relationship that the character had with her husband. It’s kind of a neat thing, because you see how the character is able to devise all of the weapons she uses to defend herself with. On the other hand you got this huge mountain man, who’s not only scary looking but seems to enjoy his craft of collecting bodies and turning them into works of art. And of course what would be a Don Coscarelli film without him casting the tall man Angus Scrimm in it. Angus plays a captive of the mountain man whom for some odd reason is kept alive. His cameo appearance is priceless. He plays the crazy old man well, and practically steals the show. The acting in this film is pretty decent and overall the performances were a pleasure to watch.

In terms of special effects go, there is not much in the way of CGI compared to the great make-up effects. The art direction and production value is out of this world, especially the mountain house with all the bodies stuck on stakes and crosses around it.

Overall, and so far this is my favorite of the series. It mixes a blend of Wrong Turn, House of 1000 Corpses, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre all rolled into one, however this is only a single killer with no family. But the overall look will remind of the classics I’ve mentioned above. Well worth checking out.
