I don’t know about you, but I’m really get sick of Hollywood bashing the president. Not that I’m defending him or anything, but come on, this shit is getting way out of control. It seems like every film has to have something in it bashing the president in one form or another. This film is pretty much a fuck you to George Bush, and it says that the president is more like a dictator than an American.
Anyway, the concept of this film is about a group of dead solders who’s bodies are shipped back to the United States after being killed in combat, by what many believe is a useless war. Their corpses mysteriously come back to life. However these undead solders don’t want to eat your brains. They want to go home and vote in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, we thrust into the political agenda of the current president and his aids, whom are looking at ways to keep the president in the white house. They are seen on Television shows promoting him and his agenda and so on. But when the dead solders start to make themselves known and what their agenda is, the presidents aids go into a panic and try to clean up the mess that the dead have planned. Which is vote in a new president, one of which will take our troops out of the country we are at war with in the film. Which is not really mentioned mind you.
My overall opinion of the film is pretty much what I stated above, I expected a good old fashioned zombie film, what I got was a political statement. One of which can only be bought up some many times before us fans and people in this country say enough already. The acting in this films at times was pretty bad, enough to make me laugh, but the overall ability of acting in the film was ok. The special effects were pretty good, I actually enjoyed them a lot, nothing like good old fashioned zombie effects to brighten up your day. The production value was aright, I mean it seemed to have less of that big budget feel to it and more of a movie made for Television look. Especially with all the government facility sets.
I also wanted to point out a few good things I liked about the plot, one of which includes a sub plot which follows our lead actor in the film. This in a way advocates gun control, which I praise the writer and director for not making the film a one issue film, although it can seem that way. We get a god flash back scene to when our lead actor was younger, His brother who was discharged from the army during the Vietnam war, attempts to shot himself with a pistol, when his little brother walks in on him. Seeing his brother there he puts the gun away and locks it up, however he fails to keep his hiding spot of the key a secret. And his little brother gets his hand on the gun thinking it’s a toy, a shots and kills him. We also get a homage scene to Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, where our lead actor takes his mother to the Cemetery to see his brother grave, and well you guessed it. Solder corpses attack.
Overall, I really wanted to like this film, but the whole political stance the film took just turned me off. I mean if the film did not attack what’s going on in the world today, and our own country I probably would of liked it better. But I am honestly sick of everyone attacking our political system, our president and our country. I may not totally agree with what’s going on myself, but I don’t constantly need it jammed my throat. Especially when I’m doing something that I love; watching movies.
