The third installment of the Harry Potter series is a a lot darker than the first two films. It’s got more of this horror/goth kind of feeling and images of death seem to play a big role. Harry and friends are another year older and are at that age where puberty is hitting them. School work is harder and more privileges are handed to them at Hogwarts. the film has a slew of new characters and if your a fan of the books you know that in the book that a lot of odd things happen. However being a big fan of the books myself I found that the film left out a lot of detail that is explained in the book. But that’s what you got to do to fit a long story into 2 1/2 hours of film.

The acting in the film is good and with the acquisition of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black was perfect, no one could of cast a better actor for this role.. The kids once again were perfect as well as the rest of the cast. One thing that kind of bothered me though was that late Richard Harris was replaced as Dumbledore by Michael Gambon. Not to say that Mr. Gambon did not do a good job, it’s just that Richard Harris had more of a magical touch when he played the character. Another perfect casting job that I must mention was David Thewlis as Professor Lupin, he did a great job as well.

The effects of course were great, and made the film very fun to watch. the script was good but in my mind this film was the weaker of the three. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a darker story or if it is the fact it does not have as much of a magical feel as the first two films.

Overall it’s worth checking out, but I still like the first two films better. However it’s still a great film and I enjoyed it.
