This is the first feature of this French director. Bruno later went on to film television shows and features for TV, and still going strong . But back in the 70’s, everyone wanted to give their piece of cinematic exploration, thus Morgana was conceived. Very stylish and way out there akin to the Euro flare of back in the day. So let me elaborate….. Do not try and understand, just let it go.
Anna (Michéle Perello) and Francoise (Mireille Saunin) set themselves upon a trip like no other, well none that they know of. On their way to where ever they were going their car breaks down. So they set up shop in a little stone shack for the night. A little sultry action ensues between the 2 mislead ladies. When Anna wakes up, she finds her friend missing, but before she can even look, a frightening little dwarf with the most theater spoken tongue named Gurth (Alfred Baillou) leads Anna to where Francoise resides. On to a boat Anna steps and with the help of the fantastic, the boat guides her to the castle of lust. There, she runs into the holder of the castle Morgana. A love induced species which needs the souls of the young and persuaded. If you want to live to be old and decrepit then go away from the castle, if you want the stay young forever then your soul is all it takes. Will Anna fall into the trap like Francoise? Did Francoise choose the life? What about the other ladies of the castle? Only you, the reader are able to find out these questions of soft core beautiness of the French kind.
If you want to delve into the realm of the unknown and unpredictable then this movie is certainly for those seeking other answers of the 70’s kind. A look into the Bordeaux of sexuality. Ladies on ladies in elegant gowns dancing and frolicking within the confines of the Morgana one herself. It states in the movie itself that sometimes you just need NOT to know what is going on which fittingly suits this movie. You want logic? Then go elsewhere. The music is hypnotizing in that 70’s psychedelic nature. Jazzy and surreal. Camera is a little shaky at times, a little to hand held if you ask me but the ambience of this mystical feature really reverberates with good wholesome nature. Not of the exploitive kind. A little more subtle then full on porn.
This release comes with a never scene uncut version. Deleted scenes. Exclusive interview with the director. Trailer. Optional subtitles (yes, this is subtitled movie). A bonus short of Bruno’s early filming. Background information, large and still photos and so on. Packed with enough goodies to keep the answers and questions coming in. A personal pick of mine.
